Toolbar

The toolbar, also called a bar or standard toolbar (originally known as ribbon) is a graphical control element on which on-screen icons can be used. A toolbar often allows for quick access to functions that are commonly used in the program. Some examples of functions a toolbar might have are open file, save, and change font. Toolbars are usually distinguished from palettes by their integration into the edges of the screen or of other windows. This can result in wasted space if multiple underpopulated bars are stacked atop each other or interface inefficiency if overloaded bars are placed on small windows.

Examples of use of toolbars
1. The best–known toolbars belong to the big search engines – Google and Yahoo – although instant messaging programs and other online applications also offer easy access to their services via desktop toolbars.
2. Companies can use the technology to update toolbars online and to add or remove buttons.
3. Google Türkiye presents its services through graphics, indexes, groups, toolbars and adwords in Turkish.
4. Today there are millions of types of toolbars, and technology developed by Israeli startup Conduit turns them into an easy way for site owners to connect with surfers.
5. Conduit, which last week completed an $8 million round of fundraising led by Benchmark Capital, has focused not on helping users reach their favorite sites, but on enabling site owners or blog managers to relay information directly to the toolbars installed on user desktops.
